What to Know Before You Go to Faneuil Hall, Boston's Historic Marketplace

Wander through this waterfront gathering space and feel the buzz of history. A marketplace and meeting hall since 1742, Faneuil Hall has long been a community hub and it played an important part in the American Revolution. Today, you'll find the market jam-packed with busy cafes, gastropubs, and funky gift shops. Linger on the cobblestone promenade to watch jugglers, musicians, and street performers. From here, you can set off along the Freedom Trail or hop on a bus tour of the city. Faneuil Hall is easy to reach from our boutique hotel, which is located just 0.5 miles away.

FAQs

  • When can I see the street performers at Faneuil Hall?

Acrobats, magicians, jugglers, and musicians perform at Faneuil Hall every day. There is no set schedule for the street performers, however they start around 11:00 a.m. and become more active during the late afternoon and evening. Weekends and holidays are the best times to see them.
  • Why is Faneuil Hall called "The Cradle of Liberty?"

Faneuil Hall earned the nickname "The Cradle of Liberty" because it attracted so many revolutionary rabble-rousers in the heady days leading up to the war. Wendell Phillips famously said, "‘Those who cannot bear free speech had best go home. Faneuil Hall is no place for slavish hearts."
